Tributes to Patnam Sri SUBRAMANYA IYER (Born 1845 - Died 31 July 1902), Indian Carnatic Classical Music Vocalist, Teacher and Composer, on his Death Anniversary today.. He was born in 1845 in Tanjavur to Bharatham Vaidyanatha Iyer, his father. He hailed from a musical tradition: his grandfather was Bharatham Panchanada Sastry, the samasthana vidwan at the court of Serfoji II and his uncle Melatture Ganapati Sastrigal was also a vocalist and taught him music, along with Kothavasal Venkatarama Iyer and Manambucchavadi Venkatasubbaiyyar. Among his sishyas were Ramanathapuram (Poochi) Srinivasa Iyengar, Kakinada C.S. Krishnaswamy Iyer, G Narayanaswamy Iyer, Mysore Vasudevacharya, Guruswamy Iyer, Tiger Varadachariar, Muthialpet Sesha Iyer (known as Kulla Sesha Iyer), M.S. Ramaswamy Iyer, and Enadi Laksmi. Tributes to Kanchipuram Shri NAINA PILLAI or C. Subramanya Pillai (Born 25 July 1889- Died 2 May 1934 ), Indian Carnatic Classical Music Vocalist, on his Birth Anniversary today. Glittering rendition, emphasis on Laya, a full bench of accompanists were the hallmarks Naina Pillai;s concerts. These included the violinist, the mridangam vidwan and a konnakkol artist besides others on the ghatam, the morsing, the kanjira, the dholak and the gettu vadyam. Naina Pillai belonged to a family dedicated to Music. His mother and aunt Dhanakoti of Conjeevaram, a great artiste of her time and among the first musicians to record their voices for the gramophone. were disciples of Kasi Sastri, a great grandson of Syama Sastri. During his childhood, he was boisterous in the extreme until he met a mendicant from the Upanishad Brahmam Mutt who was good in Music.
